Just what is this thing called firmware?

Firmware refers to the embedded software that is utilized by a piece of hardware, such as a digital camera, to control various aspects of the gear’s operation. Does it make no sense? In point of fact, it is not. It is what allows a piece of hardware to function properly. In addition to computers and other types of consumer electronics, cameras also have a software component known as firmware.

Products are designed by manufacturers with the expectation that regular upgrades to the underlying firmware will be released. Firmware updates can resolve issues such as bugs, offer customers with more functionality and features, or improve the device’s compatibility with other products. Examples of such items include lenses and new media card formats.

How exactly does one go about updating the software on the camera?
